BMW 750 Overview

After one stab of the loud pedal, you understand why BMW doesn't bother to make an M version of the 7 Series. The 2011 BMW 750Li Alpina B7 is all the M7 you'll ever want, a fire-breathing 500-horsepower version of the BMW 7 Series that doesn't forget that it's all right to be comfortable while you're hurtling down the autobahn at top speed.

Fortunately the 2011 BMW 750Li Alpina B7 isn't restricted to the German autobahn. The Alpina B7 is available through BMW dealers in the U.S. as the successor to the limited-edition 2007-'08 Alpina B7.

The Alpina B7 is actually the fourth generation of Alpina's high-performance version of the full-size BMW sedan. And now that Alpina also has its own design, engineering and test center, the B7 is also the most comprehensively engineered car in that series. Maybe that's why the 2011 BMW 750Li Alpina B7 manages a subtlety that completely belies the car's uniqueness.

Tuner car with tacked-on body kit and loud exhaust this is not.

New 2011 BMW 750LI

The BMW 7-series is the pinnacle of BMW sedans. A big luxury sedan that is loaded with state-of-the-art technology to keep you safe on today's roads.

Available in rear-wheel drive, or xDrive all-wheel drive, the 750i and long-wheelbase 750Li are powered by a direct-injection, 400-hp 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The 750 has many standard luxury features such as four-zone automatic climate control, power sunroof, high-gloss wood trim, heated 16-way multi-contour seats, voice-activated navigation system on a 10.2-inch color monitor, power trunk lid, HD radio and BMW Assist emergency and information communications. Standard run-flat tires wrap 18-inch alloy wheels, while standard Park Distance Control, adaptive brake lights and steerable adaptive bi-xenon headlights provide active safety. High-tech options include rear and surround-view cameras, high-beam assistant, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, dual LCD screens for rear seat entertainment and ventilated front seats.

For 2011, the 750 is unchanged, with the exception of a power trunklid and Comfort Access keyless entry becoming standard equipment.

Infiniti IPL G Convertible

Infiniti IPL G Convertible Concept
Infiniti IPL G Convertible Concept – Click above to enlarge image

The first Infiniti Performance Line offering was unveiled at Pebble Beach last month in the form of the IPL G37 Coupe. The 348-horsepower G hardtop wears a factory-designed bodykit and came with engine and chassis tweaks to make things slightly firmer and faster. It goes on sale in December.

This week, its droptop brother will arrive at the Paris Motor Show. Infiniti hasn't announced power output, but we expect the IPL G Convertible Concept will probably be a shade less muscular than the coupe, as is the case with the non-IPL models. The automaker hasn't given away any hint of pricing, either, but VP Ben Poore did say "IPL promises unique driving attributes from other Infiniti models, without adding stratospheric prices," if that's any consolation. Stay tuned for complete details later in the week.

Sporty and Efficient: 10,000th Audi TT 2.0 TDI

Sporty and Efficient: 10,000th Audi TT 2.0 TDI Leaves the Assembly Line - Hot News -

The Audi TT 2.0 TDI’s sales success proves that dynamism and efficiency are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, this modern combination appeals strongly to customers. Since its market launch in 2008, the proportion of Audi TT sports car sales accounted for by the 2.0 TDI version with 125 kW (170 hp) has risen steadily. This week the 10,000th of these highly efficient cars will leave the Audi assembly line.

The Audi TT Coup 2.0 TDI quattro and Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro are the world’s first series-production sports cars with a diesel engine. It’s a two-liter, four-cylinder unit with a power output of 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque for dynamic propulsion. In the TT Coup the TDI engine is content with a fuel consumption of 5.3 liters per 100 km (44.38 US mpg) – the lowest figure in the sports car segment of the market.

A major factor in the TT’s combination of high performance and pioneering efficiency is the body. It uses Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, with a combination of lightweight aluminum at the front and pressed steel at the back of the car. This material mix helps to achieve well-balanced axle loads and keep the overall weight down to a very low figure. The body of the TT Coup weighs only 206 kilograms (454.15 lb), made up of 140 kg (308.64 lb) of aluminum and 66 kg (145.5 lb) of steel.

Audi has now stepped up the pace with an effective blend of dynamic performance and low fuel consumption: after this product improvement the Audi TT is available with a new, extensively revised version of the 2.0 TDI engine. The TT Coup now sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 226 km/h (140.43 mph), but with CO2 emissions of only 139 g/km (223.7 g/mile).

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 new

A new aluminum block for the 5.4-liter V8 helps shave 120 pounds from the 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

Just the fastest production Mustang ever, and the quickest, with some serious upgrades from the substantially revised 2010 GT500.

The improvements start under the hood, where the GT500 retains the 5.4-liter V8 developed for the Ford GT supercar, rather than adopting a variation of the new 5.0-liter V8 introduced in the standard 2011 Mustang GT. Horsepower increases by 10 from the 2010 GT500, to 550 hp at 6,200 rpm (peak torque holds at 510 lb-ft), but that's a relatively minor part of the story. The 2011 GT500 gets a new aluminum engine block, cast by Honsel in Germany and finished with a metallurgical process called Plasma Transfer Wire Arc. Steel cylinder liners are sprayed in under extreme pressure at 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, then machined to a thickness of 150 microns.

As result, the 2011 block weighs 102 pounds less than the previous cast-iron block. Other weight (and fuel) savers include an electric power-steering pump. Charge cooling capacity for the Roots-type supercharger increases 40 percent, thanks to a larger, two-layer intercooler. Bottom line, the GT500's curb weight drops 120 pounds compared with the 2010, to 3,820 pounds. Nearly all of the reduction comes over the front axle in what is a nose-heavy car.

The 2011 GT500 also has aerodynamic improvements and sound-dampening refinements that reduce interior noise levels 20 percent, according to Ford. For the first time, it offers an optional Performance Package developed from the limited-run 2009 GT500 KR. The package includes a limited-slip differential with a shorter 3.73 gear, stiffer springs that lower ride height slightly, forged wheels, Goodyear's latest-gen Eagle F1s (255/40Z-19 front, 285/35ZR-20 rear), and unique, thinner hood stripes.

The 2011 GT500 is available now, starting at $49,495 for the coupe, including the $850 destination charge. Options include the Performance Package ($3,495), a glass roof ($1,995), a navigation/electronics package ($2,340), and Ford's Shaker 1000 audio upgrade ($1,295).

"I think the value here is unprecedented," says Jamal Hameedi, chief program engineer at Ford's Special Vehicle Team. "We're delivering supercar performance for under $50,000."

How's it drive?

The 2011 GT500 drives like ticket bait on the street, and like the fastest Mustang ever on a track. With another short reload on substantive improvements, the big swinging Mustang buries old-school pony-car shortcomings deeper in the past.

Ford's track numbers speak for themselves: 0-60 mph, 4.2 seconds; quarter-mile, 12.3 seconds at 119 mph; skid pad, 1.01 g; 60 mph-0, 106 feet. It's more than five seconds faster than the 2010 GT500 around the full 3.2-mile circuit at Virginia International Raceway. Yet the track numbers only begin to explain how much better the 2011 GT500 is than its predecessor.

The 2011 floats and drifts less readily than the 2010. It understeers less. It's generally better balanced and it has even more grip (thanks, presumably, to Goodyear's latest compounds or construction). In sport mode, its stability electronics seem more progressive.

The GT500 remains a big, heavy, wide car. It takes some familiarity to get comfortable about exactly where its edges are. But it's also quite predictable and easily manageable, even for less-accomplished drivers. Momentum is not necessarily critical in this car. The brakes are strong enough and the torque band so broad that it will cover up a lot of mistakes. You can mess up a corner, scrub off most of your speed and still count on the torque to get you flying again.

Clutch action is definitely not stiff but the pedal isn't resistance-free mush, either. It's just about right. The shifter is firm and tight--one of those single-digit salutes to the pony cars of yore. Steering is probably the element we enjoyed least. It still feels lighter than a lot of European performance cars, with a hint more wanderlust. It's not particularly quick.

On the road, third gear will get you almost anywhere you want to go, once the GT500 is rolling. The flow of torque seems almost limitless. We wouldn't guess many enthusiasts will be chugging around at 2,200 rpm, however. From midrange up, the GT500 sounds fantastic, but never intrusive. We commend SVT for its exhaust tuning.

Ford's performance group seems particularly proud that the 2011 GT500 is the first without a gas-guzzler tax (delivering 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, according to the EPA). Of course, top gear in the Tremec six-speed has a way-tall 0.5 ratio. It's good for fuel economy, but few enthusiasts will have the restraint to use it often, unless the day's journey covers a few hundred miles of interstate.

Do I want it?

Who among the Mustang faithful wouldn't want the fastest and arguably best Mustang ever? The 2011 GT500 is fabulously fast, ruggedly handsome and imposingly obvious. It has leading-edge technologies that pony cars aren't necessarily supposed to have. We'd guess, though, that the Performance Package might be a tad stiff on what passes for pavement in places like greater Detroit or eastern Pennsylvania.

As for value, you won't find 550 hp on a new-car lot for less cash. Then again, one might consider a base LS3 Chevrolet Corvette coupe. It has a nearly identical retail price (as of 2010), only a slight power-to-weight disadvantage and even better EPA ratings than the new GT500.

Closer to home, the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 delivers 412 higher-revving, aluminum-block horsepower hauling 215 fewer pounds than its big brother's supercharged engine, with still better EPA ratings (17 city, 26 highway). And it costs $19,000 less than the new GT500.

Seems like a pretty good deal on the not-quite-the-best Mustang ever.

Clay Dean runs through the finer points of the CTS-V Sport Wagon – Click above to watch video after the jump

We have no idea how it'll fare when it goes on sale, but we enjoy imagining the day when we start seeing the CTS-V Sport Wagon on the streets. Since that's still a ways off, for now we'll be happy getting our next fix from Cadillac Design Director Clay Dean, who takes us on a walk around the hottest wagon that isn't named "E63." Perhaps the most useful thing about it is that it gives us other features to talk about besides the engine – not that we'll ever really talk about them, but at least we know they're there. Follow the jump for the walk-around.

Mercedes' First-Ever Diesel-Hybrid, the E300 BlueTEC

At the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes previewed its first-ever, series-production diesel-hybrid model, the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID that will be available in both sedan and Estate body styles when it is launched onto the market at the end of 2011.

The hybrid system pairs a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 204HP with a 20HP (15kW) electric motor for a combined output of 224 horsepower and a torque of over 580 Nm or 427.8 lb-ft.

The electric motor, positioned between the internal combustion engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission, assists the diesel unit when the car is accelerating (boost effect) and is used for the recuperation of braking energy in alternator mode. Furthermore, it can be used to power the car alone for short distances at speeds of up to 35 km/h or 22 mph.

According to Mercedes, the E 300 BlueTEC's hybrid system doesn't restrict boot space and variability in the slightest, as all of the hybrid technology, including the high-voltage battery, is housed in the engine compartment.

The German automaker said that the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID returns a combined fuel economy of 4.1 lt/ 100km (equal to 57.4 mpg US) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.

The 335i Coupe and Convertible can accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in just 5.3 (5.5) seconds and 5.5 (5.7) seconds

Although BMW's 3-series has been arguably considered one of the best buys in the automotive market for quite some time, the Bavarians are never satisfied.
The E92/3 3-series coupes/convertibles have been heralded by the media and enthusiast's alike but it has started to show its gray hairs.

Thankfully, BMW realized this and brought out its big guns to tweak her up and get it ready to go out and woo the boys.

2011 will bring about a bunch of modifications -- inside and out -- and although they seem small, they certainly add up. If you are about to order a 2010, you may want to reconsider and hold off OR if you like the current version better, it may be a good time to go cut a killer deal on the cars remaining in dealer's inventory. For someone that is detail oriented, like myself, I know that I would want to take note.

So, here is the short list without all of the marketing mumbo jumbo:
  • New, standard Xenon headlights with eyebrow
  • LED Angel Eyes
  • New LED taillights
  • Refined and widened kidney grille
  • New, N55 single-turbo motor -- still produces 300-horsepower, 300 lb-ft of torque
  • Redesigned front/rear bumpers
  • Redesigned side mirrors
  • New colors: Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Vermillion Red Metallic, Mineral White Metallic
  • Modified paddle shifters are now "pull" operated -- "+" on right, "-" on left

BMW's press release follows:

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 16, 2011 6pm Eastern Time… BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in Spring 2010, and pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Fundamentally unchanged are each car’s essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension…all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model. Internally designated the “N55,” this turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features essentially the same “short block” and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but benefits from five additional years worth of development and refinement. The result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running than its outstanding predecessor, but preserves the previous engine’s output and soul: 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox – beloved by North American enthusiast drivers - remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring “pull-style” shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.

Design. Reflecting the legendary distinction of BMW Coupes and Convertibles
The profile of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible is instantly recognizable at first glance. Beyond the basic shape of the car and its classic lines, the new design of the headlights, the enhanced depth and detail of the taillights, the interior, and even the exterior mirrors were specifically created for the Coupe and Convertible. These unique design elements reflect the sporty character of the car. The driver who chooses a two-door vehicle desires a car with dynamic looks as well as driving performance. With this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique, unmistakable blend of design features and most importantly, driving pleasure.

It all begins with proportions. The new, long hood powerfully symbolizes BMW's loyalty to the inherently balanced inline-6 engine. The long wheelbase, short overhangs, the passenger compartment set aft and the low, sleek roofline which seamlessly slopes into the trunk are all characteristics of the BMW Coupe and BMW retractable hardtop Convertible.

In addition to the classic proportions, three design lines—the shoulder, character and lower sill lines— enhance the sleek appearance. Both the shoulder line and character line stretch uninterrupted to the back of the car, allowing one's eye to move quickly and smoothly from front to rear along the entire length of the car. The sill line of the lower edge of the door flows into the front and rear air dams, reinforcing the dynamic nature of BMW's newest 3 Series Coupe and Convertible.

The combination of lines flowing into one another elegantly emphasizes the vehicles’ performance potential. While the shoulder line rises slightly but consistently from front to rear, the character line flows in a long, stretched arch all the way from the front fender to the new taillights. As the sill line, by contrast, moves up slightly to the rear in a slow and gentle curve, the distance between the character and sill lines becomes smaller near the rear wheel arches. The fender flare around each rear wheel also serves to give the character line extra tension in both an upward and outward direction.

Attractive new innovations at the front, side, and rear - integrated precisely into the overall look of the car- give greater emphasis to the sportiness of both models. At the same time, these modifications slightly extend the overhangs front and rear (now 1.14” and 0.12” longer, respectively), which adds a sleeker and even more athletic appearance.

The new, widened kidney grille, a signature feature of every BMW, suits the broad new hood and stands out from the surfaces around it. Interaction with the three-dimensional kidney frame creates a look of power and unique style. The frame around the kidney grille now features a chrome band precisely twisted within itself.

The 3 Series Coupe and Convertible come standard in the U.S. with Xenon Adaptive Headlights, accented by BMW's signature corona light rings. At the top, the new headlights merge into a trim bar cutting off the light beam to create that concentrated, focused look typical of a genuine BMW. The corona rings, now powered by super-bright LED light sources, can serve as daytime running lights (if that feature is activated), and also as evening city lights, making the Coupe and Convertible instantly recognizable as a BMW, day or night. The upper edge of each headlight fixture is also illuminated by an LED light source.

The new design of the taillights is unique to the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. The rear light cluster feature two-piece L-shapes and are further accentuated by a new color scheme. With two rows of light tubes that illuminate simultaneously, they create a night design with depth and dimension. Integrated flush into the body of the car, the lights are split into two sections and extend up the trunk lid, blending with the character lines from the side profile. Horizontal LED tube taillights give the car an unmistakable look at night. The horizontal flowing lines accentuate the wide track and low stance of the Coupe and Convertible.

An additional horizontal contour line has been added to the rear air dam to further accentuate the width of the Coupe and Convertible. It creates light-and-shade effects to give the entire rear end a flatter and smoother appearance.

The exterior mirrors also receive a new design, adding further innovation to the unique looks of the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. They blend harmoniously into the side view and silhouette of each new model.

Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Vermillion Red Metallic, and Mineral White Metallic exterior colors will each become available for the new 3 Series Coupe and Convertible this spring.

Interior: a truly stylish ambiance
The emphasis on individual style, dynamic performance and exclusivity continues within the interior. Here again, the focus is on the driving experience, as announced by the standard leather multifunction steering wheel. Horizontal lines dominate the surfaces on and around the instrument panel which blend with the lines of the center console door panels to give the interior a light but dynamic feel. In true BMW fashion, all operational and informational elements essential to driving are grouped on and around the steering wheel. Climate controls, as well as those for the audio and navigation systems, are within easy reach of the front passenger.

Because the Coupe and Convertible are four-passenger cars, the rear seat passengers are treated to a center console between their individual rear seats which includes individual storage boxes, additional air outlet vents, and footwell lights.

The BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible come standard with Dark Burl Walnut wood trim. As a choice, Bamboo Anthracite wood, Light Burl Walnut wood, and Aluminum trim are optional. Like the standard Dark Burl Walnut, these materials appear on the dash, front and rear consoles, doors and rear side panels.

The standard leatherette upholstery is available in Black and Creme Beige. For the optional leather upholstery, luxurious Dakota leather can be chosen. Here too, the buyer may choose Creme Beige, Oyster, Coral Red, Saddle Brown, Gray, or Black. Upholstery leather appears on the seat facings, door inserts and door handle surrounds; other leather-trimmed items include the gear shift boot, handbrake grip and steering wheel.

In other items of trim that don't change with upholstery or trim options, the interior door handles, gearshift surround trim, steering wheel spokes, instrument dial and engine Start/Stop button surrounds, dash air-outlet adjusting tabs and the optional iDrive controller are in pearl-gray galvanic material.

An elegant ambiance is further created in the interior by special lighting and switches with a premium look and feel. Ambiance lighting, streaming down from under the ledge on the door and side panels, and running from the A pillar all the way to the rear passenger area, creates a particularly warm, indirect lighting effect.

Through its design and configuration, the cabin emphasizes the sporting and driver-oriented character of the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. Taking a seat behind the steering wheel, the driver’s eyes will immediately focus on the instrument cluster.

All-new turbocharged engine with Valvetronic for 335i
BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible customers have a choice of two inline-6 engines that are the worlds’ finest. The 328i features 230 horsepower while the 335i has 300 horsepower and is the first inline-6 equipped with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, BMW’s Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, High Precision direct fuel injection, and all-aluminum construction.

The 335i’s new inline-6 engine displaces 3.0-liters and develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm. Redline is 7,000 rpm. This is the same level of performance as the previous 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of Valvetronic, this new engine is even more fuel efficient.

Historically, BMW engineers were never satisfied with the most often-cited downside to turbocharging: the frustrating “turbo lag” that occurs between the time at which driver presses the accelerator pedal and when the turbocharger develops sufficient rotation to increase power. Turbo lag is usually worse at low engine speeds. Other drawbacks included relatively high fuel consumption and poor emissions output. At the time, turbocharger technology was not a reliable, practical or efficient was to make power. For these and other reasons, BMW put turbocharged gasoline engines on the shelf for more than 20 years.

Two recent developments caused BMW to reconsider turbocharging. While many luxury-performance carmakers began to achieve power gains by building engines of ever-increasing displacement, BMW looked for a more efficient way; smaller engines and turbocharging made sense. Also, the technology transfer from BMW’s turbocharged diesel engines could easily be transferred to their gasoline-fired counterparts. Accordingly, BMW articulated its new approach to developing high-performance engines as part of its EfficientDynamics initiative.

The new N55 is the first BMW inline-6 to combine turbocharging, High Precision direct fuel injection, and Valvetronic variable intake technology. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing to boost performance and minimize the response lag. Thanks to its housing design which maintains proper separation between streams of exhaust gasses, the turbocharger builds up pressure much faster than previous-generation turbochargers, thus eliminating even the slightest tendency for lag.

A further advantage of turbocharging is that this is the most weight-efficient method to boost engine power and performance. The N55 turbocharged inline-6 weighs approximately 150 lbs. less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder engine displacing 4.0 liters. This lower weight means a significant advantage not only in fuel economy, but also in balancing the car's weight distribution.

Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to “inhale” air for combustion with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. As a result, the engine makes power more quickly than ever before, and this is proven by the N55’s ability to reach peak torque at 1200rpm, 200rpm earlier than its predecessor.

As a result, the technology in the BMW 335i Coupe and Convertible represents a significant achievement in terms of both performance and fuel efficiency. The advantages over a conventional turbocharged engine are not only clearly measurable, but easy to feel on the road.

Turbocharging typically includes intercooling of the engine's induction air, that is, cooling the compressed air that emerges, very much heated up by the compression process, from the turbocharger(s). Sometimes it's done with coolant; in the case of the N55 engine, it's accomplished with outside air. Intercooling is necessary to reduce the temperature of the incoming air to preclude detonation or "knocking" that can reduce power or, in the extreme, damage the engine. Of course, the N55, like all other current BMW engines, is equipped with knock control as part of the Digital Motor Electronics (DME) engine management system. On the N55 engine, the DME is now mounted directly to the top of the engine for better packaging and weight savings.

The significant loads and cylinder pressures of the N55 300-hp engine required the use of an aluminum engine structure with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. Altogether, the N55 weighs about 427 lbs. The 335i Coupe and Convertible dual exhaust system runs at both sides of the vehicle. At low loads, a flap channels most gas through one side to reduce low-frequency exhaust "rumble." The 335i Coupe and Convertible feature an air-to-oil external oil cooler mounted in one wheel well as opposed to the N52's coolant-to-oil unit.

The peak power of 300 hp at 5800rpm has already been mentioned; this is fully 70 hp up on the 2011 328i models. At least as important is the fact that this engine can deliver its peak torque from 1200 rpm - not far above idling - to 5000 rpm. On the road, this power and torque result in outstanding performance. The 335i Coupe and Convertible can accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in just 5.3 (5.5) seconds and 5.5 (5.7) seconds, respectively, when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission. The sense of urgency continues all the way to the electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (150 mph when equipped with the optional Sport Package). The 335i xDrive coupe accelerates 0-60 mph in 5.2 (5.3) seconds when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission.

Finally, the new N55 engine is able to achieve a more favorable emissions signature than its predecessor. The single turbocharger has only one exhaust path and feeds a single catalytic converter in place of the previous engine’s two. This means the exhaust gases are concentrated at the catalytic converter for better cold-start emissions performance, making the N55 a more environmentally friendly engine.

The 328i Convertible is powered by BMW's 230 horsepower, 200 lb-ft, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, known internally as the N52. Its magnesium/aluminum construction and Valvetronic variable valve lift are features found only on BMW engines. The N52 achieves impressive progress on all performance and technology fronts, especially in its remarkably light weight of 357 lbs. An aluminum/magnesium engine block, hollow camshafts, plastic camshaft cover, improved combustion chambers, a further evolved Double VANOS, higher fuel injection pressure, sophisticated engine electronics, an electric coolant pump, a variable-volume oil pump and an oil/coolant heat exchanger are the other weight-saving features and improvements of this engine over previous generations.

For the Coupes: Available xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
The 2011 BMW 335i xDrive Coupe combines intelligent all-wheel drive with the power of BMW’s new 300-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Likewise, the 2011 BMW 328i xDrive Coupe will impress with its 230-hp, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine featuring magnesium-aluminum construction. On smooth, dry roads BMW’s xDrive gives a sporty, rear-wheel drive feel. But on a wet or snow-covered road, xDrive automatically sends more torque to the axle with more traction. BMW’s xDrive is the most sophisticated and responsive all-wheel drive system on the market today. It has proven its merits, in terms of agility and safety, in the 19 BMW models currently offered with xDrive in the U.S.

For the Convertibles: Sun-Reflective Leather offers cooler seats

BMW is the first carmaker in the world to use sun-reflective technology to mitigate temperatures on leather seating, armrest surfaces, headrests, and gear shifter. The process uses modified color pigments imbedded in the leather during the production process to reflect the infrared radiation of the sun in wavelengths of more than 720 nanometers.

2011 BMW 3-Series Coupe/Convertible Gets A New Motor & Visual Updates

the now more modern BMW line-up

With every new model launched or redesigned, comes another photos comparison. the week revolves around the 2011 BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible LCI that was unveiled yesterday and which will go on sales this Spring.

Judging by the photos and information released, the general consensus is that BMW is looking to align some of its models to the current design language, and features like “angel eyes” are starting to become standard across the line-up. LED taillights are also becoming the norm at BMW and the new 3 Series LCI comes to emphasize that.

Regarding the exterior of the car – BMW, like they did with the pre-LCI E92, have managed to make the E92 continue to look much more expensive than it actually is. The facelifted E92 continues to give a strong balance between prestige and performance purely in appearance alone.

Additionally, at front and rear, while the revisions appear minimal, the proof is in the details. At the business end of the 3 Series Coupe, the head lamps have grown slightly with added contours to the bottom line of the head lamp assembly. A thin “eyebrow” can now be found running along the top of each assembly which is lit by LEDs – a design cue taken straight from the E90 LCI, F01 7 Series and F10 5 Series.

Dropping just below the head lamps, the lower bumper is the most heavily modified part of the E92 LCI, losing the struts that flowed with the cut lines of the nose of the car. In its place, BMW have added a slim cut straight across the center of the lower grill, only being broken up by the area just below the larger, wider double kidney grill. Overall, the appearance of the E92 LCI now looks more succinct with the rest of the now more modern BMW line-up.

Moving to the rear of the car, the lower portion of the bumper receives a larger, purposeful crease along the valence just above the exhaust. The L-shaped tail lamps also receive a mild facelift with a more opaque cover to the LEDs when compared to the pre-LCI E92.

Additionally, the pattern of the rear lamp LEDs has two stacked sets of LEDs to provide better visibility at night while also providing a distinctly BMW look. By comparison, the LCI E92 now looks much brighter and contoured over its predecessor.

The side design goes through some changes as well, the E92 LCI features longer overhangs and subtle changes to the side skirts, giving the facelift an overall more aggressive, masculine look.

Take a look at the field of 2010 SuperGT competitors

SuperGT Lexus LFA GT500 – Click above for image gallery

Take a look at the field of 2010 SuperGT competitors and something's amiss. Nissan's been campaigning its new GT-R in the series for two years and Honda recently revealed the HSV-010 before its inaugural run in the series this May. What's missing? A new competitor from Toyota.

Jyuichi Wakisaka and Andre Lotterer took the overall GT500 win in the team's Lexus SC430 last year, but that model is not long for this world, so it's just a matter of time before Toyota fields a new car in the series. So what's set to take the SC430's place? The answer's obvious: the Lexus LFA.

Although Toyota's yet to confirm the LFA's entrance (we're expecting an announcement later this year), Iain Chandler, a skilled 3D artist hailing from Australia, has rendered a GT500-class LFA, complete with six sets of livery. While it's far from official it's a pretty good indication of what to expect when Toyota finally pulls the trigger, and Lotterer seems to approve – he posted the images on his site.

the Veyron Blanc Noir appears to be a one-off

You didn't really think it was over, did you? The Sang Bleu was supposed to be the last special edition Bugatti Veyron, but word (and pictures) on the street suggest otherwise. Exhibit Z: the Grand Sport Blanc Noir edition, which follows the trio of Dubai specials into the Veyron special sunset.

Apparently created for a high-end clothier, the Veyron Blanc Noir appears to be a one-off (like the Pegaso) rather than a limited-production run (like the Fbg par Hermes). Based on the targa-roofed Grand Sport, the Black Noir edition – spotted in California – is all done up, as the name suggests, in black and white: a matte white body with glossy black hood, wheels, spoiler, fuel filler cap and more. And of course, there's the requisite nameplate on the lower front corner of the door. Check it out in the gallery below for all the angles.

Compared to static-laden traditional AM/FM radio, HD Radio offers CD-quality sound on FM channels

Audi has announced that HD Radio Technology will be standard on its 2011 model year A6, A8 and Q7 vehicles. The 2011 Audi A4, A5 and Q5 models, sold at lower price points, will also offer the technology, but with the optional navigation radio.
"We are dedicated to providing our customers with the best entertainment options to enhance their Audi driving experience," said Filip Brabec, General Manager, Product Planning at Audi of America. "These upcoming 2011 models will be fully equipped with the best in digital broadcast engineering, making it a clear choice to offer HD Radio Technology to our customers."
Compared to static-laden traditional AM/FM radio, HD Radio offers CD-quality sound on FM channels, and FM-stereo quality sound on AM channels. According to iBiquity Digital Corporation, the company holding the trademark for HD Radio, there are more than 2,000 HD Radio stations and more than 1,100 HD2/HD3 channels (FM multicast) currently on the air. As of today, HD radio is available to 85 percent of Americans. It's interesting to note that when HD Radio debuted, "HD" was the abbreviation for "Hybrid Digital," but that was later dropped. Today, "HD" is simply part of the brand name - contrary to popular belief, it doesn't stand for "high-definition." Audi's press release is pasted after the jump.

The One-77 really is the Best of British

2010 Year of the Coupe

World exclusive: If you thought 2009 was an eventful time for British manufacturers, just wait until you see what they have in store for 2010! Auto Express is kicking off the New Year by gathering together a home-grown crop of the coolest coupés and supercars around. And at the very top of this list is the sleekest big cat to emerge since the legendary XJS…

Jaguar XJ - See it: 2010
The dust has barely settled on the unveiling of Jaguar’s flagship XJ saloon. However, design director Ian Callum has already let slip that a two-door XJ Coupé has been drawn up by his team. Our exclusive renderings show for the first time how such a car might look.

Enthusiasts will recall the ultra-rare XJC, made from 1975 to 1978. This came with a 4.2-litre straight-six or a 5.3 V12, and was based on the Series II Jaguar XJ – and only 8,378 were built. The new car will revive the XJC’s badge and a selection of its distinctive design cues.

More steeply raked front and rear windscreens give a classic coupé profile, while a full-length sunroof adds to the flowing lines. Body-coloured B-pillars help to visually elongate the XJ’s already
substantial footprint on the road.

The car is likely to be offered with supercharged and naturally aspirated versions of Jaguar’s 5.0-litre V8, as well as the 3.0 V6 diesel producing 600Nm of torque. It will go head-to-head with Mercedes’ two-door CL-Class replacement – to be renamed the S-Class Coupé – when it goes on sale in 2011.

Lotus Esprit - See it: 2010
even though the firm’s new Evora has won plaudits for its laser-like handling and refined nature, bosses aren’t resting on their laurels. Lotus is developing a successor to the mighty Esprit – the mid-engined flagship sold between 1976 and 2004. And with a choice of six, eight and 10-cylinder engines, the model has the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 firmly in its sights.

The wedge-like styling is clearly inspired by the shovel-nosed original, but the similarities end there. Lotus plans to exploit its close links with Toyota and make use of three of the firm’s most powerful engines. Entry-level cars will have a 300bhp version of the Evora’s 3.5-litre V6. Meanwhile, V8 fans can opt for the 414bhp 5.0-litre from the Lexus IS F. The range-topper will use the 550bhp 4.8-litre V10 from Lexus’ LFA.

A longer and wider version of the Evora’s platform should preserve Lotus’ trademark agility and driveability. But with the V10 version scorching from 0-60mph in less than four seconds and on to more than 200mph, the new Esprit promises to be like nothing seen before from the brand when sales start in 2011.

MINI Coupé JCW - See it: 2010
The MINI plant in Oxford is already one of the success stories of the UK auto industry, churning out more than 1.4 million new cars since 2001. And with the introduction of a new Coupé in 2011, its workforce
is preparing to be busier than ever.

The MINI Coupé Concept wowed visitors to last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show with its dramatic floating roof, and the maker soon confirmed production of the two-seater will begin this October.

Its most potent format will be the John Cooper Works variant shown in our image above. Yet while the bonnet stripes and ground-hugging bodykit could have been predicted, there’s a surprise package under the bonnet.

Our sources say MINI might rekindle its engine supply partnership with Peugeot. And as the British firm jointly developed the new range of EcoBoost units with Ford, these powerplants could find their way into the MINI Coupé, too.

Expect a 1.6-litre turbo with around 250bhp to make the Coupé JCW the fastest MINI to date – but with lower emissions than any JCW before it. For fans of the Coupé, there’s even more good news on the horizon.

A Roadster is also on the way, with a production-ready version slated to appear in 2011. And let’s not forget the firm’s first 4x4, the Crossman, is due in showrooms in September, too.

Fenix - On sale: 2011
Like a ‘Fenix’ from the ashes, Lee Noble has left the company bearing his name to rise again at the helm of Fenix Automotive – and this is the first official picture of the firm’s new model.

The as-yet-unnamed supercar features a basic design that is, ironically, reminiscent of the Noble M600. However, where that styling is relatively simple, the Fenix gets aggressive and angular lines, similar to those of the fighter jet-inspired Lamborghini Reventón.

Under the bonnet is a choice of two Corvette engines, giving 480bhp and 638bhp. The latter is lifted from the supercharged ZR1, and is said to propel the Fenix from 0-100mph in just under seven seconds.

Noble M600 - On sale: 2010
although founder Lee Noble has moved on to an exciting new project (see above), the Brit maker’s latest model is aiming for the supercar elite.

Featuring a Volvo-sourced 4.4-litre V8 boosted by two turbos, the M600 produces a huge 650bhp. That’s enough for 0-60mph in three seconds and 225mph – leaving the Ferrari 458 trailing. Yet a £200,000 price could make stealing loyal customers from the Italian legend trickier than Noble thinks.

Jaguar C-type - On sale: 2012
It’s the big cat’s small car! In the new C-Type, Jaguar is looking to reinvent an old name to take the fight to German rivals such as the Audi TT, Mercedes SLK and Porsche Cayman. As with the XK, the new C-Type’s chassis will be a lightweight yet incredibly strong and stiff aluminium monocoque, which should make the model as nimble as its competitors. Power will come from the latest 380bhp 5.0-litre V8. A supercharged 500bhp R model is also likely to be built.

McLaren MP4-12C - On sale: 2011
While its F1 predecessor was the ultimate supercar, McLaren’s latest model is described as “the most efficient, driveable, high-performance sports car in the world”. With a 600bhp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 and carbon fibre monocoque, the MP4-12C should prove itself a worthy competitor to Ferrari’s upcoming 458 Italia. At £150,000, it’s £10,000 cheaper, too. Log on to www.autoexpress.co.uk to see US chat show host Jay Leno taking a ride.

Climax sport racer - On sale: 2010
Coventry-based Climax Cars has confirmed its stunning two-seater Ariel Atom rival, the Sports Racer, for 2010. It will have a 345bhp 4.6-litre V8, plus a hand-crafted aluminium body. There’s even a 450bhp supercharged version. Prices start from £92,000 – and with only 200 set to be built, exclusivity is guaranteed.

Aston Martin One-77 - On sale: 2010
The One-77 really is the Best of British; it’s the fastest, most desirable Aston ever, and with a limited run of only 77, it looks set to take a place in the supercar hall of fame. The intricately detailed body – which has already won an Auto Express design award – hides a 7.3-litre V12 that produces 690bhp. Weighing only 1,500kg, the One-77 will sprint from 0-62mph in around 3.5 seconds, and in a recent high-speed run it was clocked at more than 220mph. Owning Britain’s best comes at a price, though: the newest Aston sells for £1.2million.

Arash AF-10 - On sale: 2010
Britain’s answer to the Ferrari Enzo gives a choice of power outputs. A 550bhp version of the AF-10, costing £320,000, will be joined in 2011 by an 800bhp supercharged variant, at £450,000. Arash is also said to be considering a £1.6m Bugatti beater with 1,200bhp.

Ford Sync App Ecosystem and MyFord

Hands on with MyFord Touch and SYNC App Ecosystem – Click above for high-res image gallery

You've read the PR, seen the press shots and probably snickered a little at the quote from Ford's Derrick Kuzak indicating that his company's latest tech "will cause people to fall in love with their vehicles again." After getting a chance to play with a few entrants into the company's so-called SYNC App Ecosystem, and getting behind the wheel of a MyFord Touch-equipped mockup vehicle, we're not laughing – but we are smiling. It's impressive tech, so follow the jump to see some videos and check our impressions.

Kia's UVO system hands-on

Tucked in between Google's hot new smartphone and a variety of other computer peripheral equipment at this year's CES show is a crossover. Not the jacked-up, tricked-out, neon-dragging customized type that we typically see around the Consumer Electronics Show, but a bone-stock, 2011 Kia Sorento. Well, stock except for one option: UVO.

We recently got a chance to try out the newly-announced system in the plastic, and while impressive in its own right, just hours after sitting down with Ford to check out the latest Sync and MyFord Touch, it's somewhat less than stunning. But, ignoring that for now, Kia's offering looks good and still ahead of the rest of the curve. It's functionally comparable to early Sync, enabling easy access to media on 1GB of internal storage, on a USB-connected drive or even on a CD. You can rip from CD straight to internal memory or to a thumb drive, an interesting feature we're not sure is particularly useful. The touchscreen display is a nice improvement over Ford's two-line Sync readout, but remember that if you get this system, you'll have to opt out of in-dash GPS. Good thing you splurged and got that Droid, right? Check out some screens in the gallery below, and there's a quick video demo after the break.
